Ian Phipps appeared at Medway Magistrates' Court today

A man has appeared in court charged with two rapes more than 20 years ago.

Ian Phipps, of Hurricane Road, West Malling, is accused of raping a schoolgirl in Halling in 1986 and a woman at Wrotham Hill in 1991.

The 49-year-old was arrested by officers from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate on Tuesday and charged yesterday.

He appeared at Medway Magistrates' Court today and has been remanded in custody until a bail hearing at Maidstone Crown Court tomorrow.

Phipps did not enter pleas to either of the charges.
