'It was like a bomb had gone off' - drama as pub ceiling collapses

The Crown Pub had to be evacuated.
The Crown Pub had to be evacuated.

A ceiling caved in on a pub full of customers, injuring two people.

The Crown Pub in Rochester High Street had to be evacuated at 8pm Saturday after the collapse of the ceiling.

Two men were slightly hurt, one suffered a gash to his head, while another chipped his tooth.

Landlord Steve Kray said: "There was so much dust it looked like a bomb had gone off. We were very lucky more people were not seriously injured. It could have been a lot worse."

Off-duty policeman Ian Whitmill was in the pub at the time.

He said: "The ceiling just suddenly fell down in a cloud of dust, about 6ft away from where I was. There was no warning. People had to dive out of the way."

The pub was shut for the rest of the evening. Staff were able to clear the debris on Sunday morning and reopened at lunchtime.
