It's shopping trolleys at dawn...

A price war has broken out among Kent's supermarkets.

Despite increased inflation and (until recently) sky high fuel costs, supermarkets have slashed prices to keep loyal customers.

In the fourth instalment of our monthly watch over prices, the cost of your weekly shopping bill has actually come down!

Now our sample buy can cost you less than £20 for the first time.

ASDA has led the way since June in the price stakes but this month it has got even more cheaper – slashing £1.37 off its total grocery bill.

An interesting turn comes from Tesco, which has been the most expensive place to shop for the past three months but in October it came out cheaper than Sainsbury’s. Its bill dropped by 14p.

The cost of shopping at Sainsbury’s has risen by 20p.

Eggs and bread are still equally priced in all three supermarkets. But they have all put up their milk prices by 3p.

Cheese has also gone up by 22p at Tesco and by 25p at Sainsbury’s. But at ASDA the price has gone down by 10p.

But there are plenty of savings to be made.

A box of Kelloggs cornflakes, for example, can be bought at the bargain price of £1 at ASDA. The cereal still remains priced at £1.69 at the other two supermarkets.

Stella premium lager costs £3.37 at ASDA whereas Tesco sells it for £3.74, a drop of 52p compared to August prices. But at Sainsbury’s the four pack lager costs £4.27.

ASDA is also keeping drivers happy after reducing the cost of unleaded fuel to 99.9p because of the current oil prices.

Darren Blackhurst ASDA trading director said: “We are committed to delivering the best value to customers across the board and we review our prices daily to achieve this.

“Drivers should not be paying more than 99.9p a litre for unleaded fuel based on current oil prices. Past experience tells us that unless they live near an ASDA they still will be.”

• At Tesco, the price of our items has fallen by 39p since June; in Sainsbury's your weekly spend has risen by 67p in that time, and at Asda your shopping now costs £19.47, a fall of 93p on June's prices.
