James Tredwell has been handed a shock England recall after being named in the 16-man squad for next month's trip to Sri Lanka.

It is a belated birthday present for the Kent man who turned 30 on Monday and is one of four spinners in the party, along with Graeme Swann, Monty Panesar and Samit Patel.

Tredwell made his one and only Test appearance in Bangladesh in March 2010 and will be one of seven players who leave on March 10 to acclimatise and prepare for the tour.

Tredwell's last England appearance was the World Cup quarter-final 10-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka in Colombo 11 months ago.
