The 33-year-old was sprayed with an unknown substance during the raid, according to The Sun newspaper.

It is thought four people were involved in the break-in, the precise date of which has not been made public, and made off with valuables.

The newspaper reported that Gill was taken to hospital but was not seriously injured.

A spokesman for Gill said: "JB and his wife had hoped to keep details of the incident private in order to safeguard their young family.

"They are well and safe having increased home security."

JLS found fame in 2008 after taking part in The X Factor and they released four albums, with hits including Eyes Wide Shut and One Shot.

The foursome - Gill, Marvin Humes, Aston Merrygold and Oritse Williams - split in 2013.

Since then, Gill has moved to a smallholding, where he rears free-range turkeys and pigs, and presents CBeebies' Down on the Farm. He also regularly appears on Songs of Praise.

He also featured on BBC One's River Walks, when he went on a tour of the River Stour, between Lenham, near Maidstone, and Pegwell Bay in Thanet, first aired in 2018 and repeated last month.

In February, the band announced they were getting back together for a tour but their plans had to be put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.
