Kent batsmen Joe Denly has turned his attentions to the Champions Trophy after scoring his first half-century for England in one-day international cricket.

Denly's knock helped his country avoid a 7-0 series humiliation against Australia on Sunday, before the squad flew out to South Africa on Monday.

They have little time to prepare for their opening group match against Sri Lanka in Johannesburg on Friday.

They then face the host nation on Sunday in Centurion before meeting New Zealand, again in Johannesburg, next Tuesday.

It’s Denly’s first experience of playing in South Africa, 6,000 feet above sea level, and he admitted: "Obviously, it’s a different experience but the South African boys at Kent have told me the wickets are good and I’m looking forward to it."

Denly and skipper Andrew Strauss shared a century stand in the four-wicket win over Australia at Chester Le Street. Denly was run out for 53, sparking a mini-collapse, before England eventually won the final game.

Speaking at Heathrow, before linking up with the rest of the squad, Denly said: "I was pleased to get the runs but would have liked to have stayed and finished the job.

"There was a bit of hesitation in the running (with Ravi Bopara), which was a bit disappointing but just one of those things.

"I am happy with the way things have gone but would have liked to have scored more runs. I felt pretty confident and not out of my depth."
