Geraint Jones will be vice-captain to new Kent skipper James Tredwell, head coach Jimmy Adams has revealed.

Jones first took on the role under previous skipper Rob Key after Martin Van Jaarsveld stepped-down from the role in 2011.

The 36-year-old former England wicketkeeper was revealed as the stand-in for Tredwell if, as expected, the spinner is busy with England duty during the coming months.

Speaking at the Kent Cricket media day on Monday afternoon, Adams said: “We have spoken about the options that are going to be available within the group if, and when, Jimmy is away on international duty.

“We have asked Geraint to basically stand in his stead if he’s not available for selection.”

Adams hinted that other senior voices in the dressing room like Darren Stevens, Brendan Nash and Key himself could also play an important role in team affairs in Tredwell’s absence.

Adams said: “We’ve backed that up, and I think it’s just as important, by making sure we have a core group of senior players who understand there’s a lot that’s going to be asked of them, as it’s likely Jimmy will be missing a few games at various points in the season.

“I’m very happy with where we’re at both in terms of the commitment from Geraint and from the core group of senior players who understand the role they have to play as and when the captain is away on international duty.

“As a club we are hoping he will play international cricket and as a club you have to be prepared for it. We certainly would like him to play as much international cricket as he can.”

Jones admitted he was pleased to have been asked an added: “I see my role as a massive support one really.

"Treddy and I have been in touch a bit. I want to make sure there’s not a huge differential in the way we do the job.

“I’ve got his thoughts about certain things and we’re very similar in what we expect from individuals and the way we want the team to play, which helps.”
