Kent has hundreds of BNP members

A controversial list of BNP membership has revealed hundreds of members living in Kent.

Ex-servicemen, a chiropodist and a woman who lists her hobbies as sewing crafts, knitting and animal welfare are all included in the leaked document.

Their names, including more than 10,000 other BNP members nationally, were revealed to a website.

In total there are 227 members in Kent, with the highest concentration in the Maidstone area.

Kent’s BNP affiliates include ex-servicemen, business owners and animal welfare workers. In some cases entire families have joined.

The list indicates:

• one member has decided to switch over to the UK Independence Party.

• one has decided not renew membership because they object to being told they cannot wear a bomber jacket.

One member, BNP Parliamentary Candidate for Shepway, Harry Williams said: “I am not bothered about my name being on the list but I sympathise with people who have sensitive jobs up and down the country.

“I think the law should come down heavily on the people who have released this information."

• Armed forces personnel are not explicitly banned but personnel are barred from political activity or demonstration.

• Medway has the second highest concentration of members in the county behind Maidstone with Dartford close behind.

• The Canterbury, Ashford and Thanet areas all have a similar number while the Isle of Sheppey has the fewest in the county.

• Members are found in many affluent areas of the county including Edenbridge, Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks
