Kent retained the English Seniors county golf title in nail-biting fashion over runners-up Cheshire at Ferndown Golf Club.

In the final round of matches, Cheshire beat Northamptonshire 8-1 but Kent's 7½–1½ success over Dorset meant they clung on to the trophy by the narrowest of margins.

Kent and Cheshire both finished on five match points but the overall victory went to Kent by virtue of winning 18½ game points to Cheshire’s 18.

Kent’s hero was Ricky Moore from Westerham GC, who holed a five-foot winning putt on the 18th green to halve his match with Brian Medlam.

"Everyone thought the championship would end in a tie and so did I,” said Kent captain Nick Allen (North Foreland). “But Ricky’s vital putt in front of a large audience did it for us.”

The Kent team was: Andrew Stracey and Chris Reynolds (Littlestone), Ricky Moore (Westerham), Dave Jessup (Rochester & Cobham), Howard Moxon (Royal Cinque Ports), Roger Salmon (Sundridge Park), Sam Smale (Royal St George's), and Chris Hurst (Pedham Place).
