Kevin Maher considering alternative options as return to Priestfield looks unlikely

Kevin Maher has yet to rule himself out of a return to Gillingham, but has options elsewhere.

The midfielder, pictured, was a regular in Andy Hessenthaler’s team last season and was made an offer, on reduced terms, to extend his stay at Priestfield.

He said: "I would be happy to stay at Gillingham. My agent had a positive meeting with the chairman in the summer and we looked at a few things but we haven’t heard anything back. I was happy to try and sort something out."

Maher acknowledges the club’s position, where players like himself faced cuts to stay, and is reluctant to up roots from his Brentwood home with his partner expecting a baby next week.

"I appreciate the club’s situation but I just wanted to know if there was any other way of going around it," he said.

"When the chairman spoke to my agent early on he was really positive and they wanted me to stay. He said he would speak to the manager and get back to me. He didn’t get back to us.

"The way I am thinking at the moment it’s not going to happen. There are a couple of things there for me now that we are looking at. Fingers crossed something can be sorted."
