Injury-hit Welling conceded two late goals to big-spending Woking in Blue Square South on Saturday.

The Wings, who led through a third minute Dean Cracknell penalty, lost two centre-backs through injury and eventually ran out of steam.

Andy Ford (pictured) handed seven players their full debuts and they took no time to settle.

Forward Tony Finn was fouled in the box and Cracknell confidently converted the spot-kick.

The visitors, who fielded three former Welling players including defender Tony Sinclair, failed to settle and did not force keeper Charlie Mitten into serious action.

Instead they spent most of the afternoon moaning at referee Paul Forrester, and a stronger official would have taken a harder line than just booking Harry Arter for persistent dissent.

Welling lost defender Graeme Andrews to injury in the 17 minute and eight minutes into the second half fellow defender Steve King was also forced off.

Welling’s makeshift defence held firm until they were made to pay in the 76 minute for conceding a number of tepid free-kicks.

Luke Medley’s free-kick hit the wall and when the ball was cleared former Charlton youngster Aswad Thomas headed in from 12 yards.

Welling’s lack of discipline showed again five minutes later when rookie substitute Cedric Ngakam fouled Guiseppe Sole and the Woking front man converted the penalty to put the visitors ahead.

Cracknell almost scored an equaliser late on but the final whistle brought wild scenes from Woking, who celebrated like they had won the league.

* Ten-man Bromley grabbed an opening day 2-1 win at Worcester thanks to an injury time goal.

Striker Warren McBean scored to hand Mark Goldberg’s team maximum points.

Worcester had taken an early lead but Luke L’Anson equalised before half-time although he was later sent off in the second half.
