Man dies after crash in Gillingham

An elderly man has died after being hit by a lorry.

The 77-year-old pedestrian, from Rainham, was hit by the dumper truck outside the Roko Health Club in Watling Street, Gillingham, between the Bowaters roundabout and Will Adams roundabout.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 2.10pm on Wednesday and the road was closed to traffic.

The man was taken to Medway Maritime hospital but later died from his injuries.

The road was closed while forensic investigations took place and was re-opened just after 9.30pm.

Police have not revealed the man’s identity.

An inquest is not expected to be opened until next week.

Kent Police’s serious collision investigation unit was called to the scene and is appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
