Man dies after falling through supermarket roof

A MAN has died in hospital after plunging through a supermarket roof while being chased by police.

The drama began at around 3.20pm on Monday at the Asda store in Graham Road at Bexleyheath. Police had been called to The Broadway by a 16-year-old girl who had complained of harassment.

Officers approached the man and asked him to stop but he ran off. A short pursuit followed and the man fell through a Perspex-style roof at the store. Police were not on the roof when he fell.

The man was taken by air ambulance to Kings College Hospital where he died at about 1pm on Tuesday.

A 46-year-old woman was also treated for cuts and bruises at Queen Mary's Hospital, but has since been released.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service Directorate of Professional Standards, led by Det Ch Insp Jamie Armstrong, is investigating the circumstances of the incident. The matter has also been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
