Watching the sun set over Margate harbour in a convertible counts as one of the 10 most romantic pastimes, according to research by car maker Vauxhall.

Ten places around Briton were identified in the survey to find out what’s most likely to get us in the mood for romance. Watching the sunset came out top with 53 per cent of the vote. Second on the love list is a candlelit dinner at 34 per cent while eight per cent opted for sharing a bubble bath.

According to this research, sunsets have been voted top of the list because they create a romantic atmosphere (64 per cent), whilst a quarter of Brits (24 per cent) said they feel sharing the experience brings them closer together with their partner. But, with daily hours of sunshine on the wane, Vauxhall is encouraging Brits to get behind the wheel and make the most of the remaining summer sunsets.

Despite our sunny outlook on love, the research reveals that the average Brit has only seen two sunsets in the UK in the past year. What's more, nearly half of us (42 per cent) haven't enjoyed a sunset in the last 12 months.

Margate harbour scored highly because it’s one of the few places on the east coast which offers a sea view facing west from the harbour arm - a key reason why Turner painted more canvases here than anywhere else.

Other places in this country which feature in the Vauxhall top 10 are Holy Island, Northumberland; Marine Drive, Llandudno; White Horse car park, Brancaster Staithe in Norfolk; Flamborough Head, Yorkshire; Naze Tower, Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex, and M4 Port Talbot steel works, Wales, where the shimmering effect of the site on the sun is 'simply sensational’.
