Tearful Jack Sturrock was almost inconsolable when his mum sat him down to tell him his dream was over.

Jack won the prize of a lifetime to be an England mascot after entering a competition in a McDonald's restaurant.

The Chelsea-mad 10-year-old had his fingers crossed that his hero Frank Lampard would make Fabio Capello's final line-up for tonight's match against Holland.

His mum Paula, of Minster Road, said the whole family, including Jack's eight-year-old brother Oliver, had been looking forward to heading up to the capital for the game and they were devastated when she broke the news they wouldn't be going.

She said she had been following the news yesterday morning when she heard the game had been cancelled.

She then checked the FA website which confirmed the news.

The riots kicked off in Tottenham on Saturday after protests over the police shooting of a local man.

By Monday night, the violence had reached Kent, with gangs of yobs terrorising parts of the Medway Towns by starting a series of fires.

Paula said: "I have a very upset little boy at the moment.

"I had to sit him down and explain that the idiots in London have messed up for everybody.

"There's nothing we can do but he's asking now if they will let him do the next one and I'm not sure about that.

"He's been crying and he just doesn't understand why they are doing it - but none of us do.

"It's ruined absolutely everything and it's just mindless yobs.

"It's totally ruined his dream."

The family hasn't decided what they are going to do to make up for Elliott Park pupil Jack's heartbreak.

An upset Jack added: "I'm really disappointed because it was a big chance in my life.

"I was really looking forward to seeing all the people around me and being really happy."
