MD GARY FRANKLIN: "Nothing can compare with the sensation of being in control of one of these incredible cars"

One of the most exclusive motoring clubs in the country, Group 20, is setting up in Rochester offering those with the means access to some of the world’s meanest motors. NEILL BARSTON was offered a spin in their prize asset, the Zonda F Roadster.

EVER wanted to be the envy of just about the entire motoring public the world over?

Well now’s your chance with the arrival of Group 20 in Rochester with its outrageous fleet of exclusive, souped-up supercars for hire.

As you might imagine, this is no ordinary club. In the tradition of London’s finest societies, you have to be invited to join this lavish motoring feast.

Taking the chance to examine some of this "automotive porn" as it has been described, it was hard not to be suitably impressed by the mouth-watering line-up.

With £2 million worth of prime wheels at its disposal, the roll-call of motors includes a Lamborghini Gallardo, Porche 911, an Aston Martin and Bentley Convertible GTC among the pick of the bunch of these pulse-raising machines.

Yet the ace in the pack has to be one of the most exclusive cars in the world the Zonda F Roadster. Only 25 of these beasts exist around the world.

I could forgive the company for not lending me the keys to this sleek carbon-fibre stallion given its price tag (if you could ever find one) of around £600,000. That’s three houses to mere mortals such as you or I. One of Group 20’s Franchise associates, Dimitro Nicolic, takes me for a spin and it’s not something I’ll forget in a hurry.

Clambering inside this implausibly expensive motor, it’s quickly apparent that its unusual hand-crafted interior cannot match the purity of its exterior design. Despite some interesting touches, you would at the very least have expected it to be kitted out in 9 carat gold, such is its value.

However, this matters little when you have more than 500 bhp at your disposal and a speedometer that tops out at 250 miles per hour. Its 7.3 litre Mercedes V12 engine rockets from 0-60 in about 3.5 seconds.

Explained Dimitro: "Although there are those who think car ownership is the way to go, there is a demand for supercar hire. There are other companies out there but none with the kind of cars we have."

It’s hard not to agree with his obvious enthusiasm for the Zonda, a rare motoring jewel. You could never argue for it being practical, but the kind of people likely to be seen out in such vehicles are not likely to lose any sleep over such issues.

The butler would no doubt be close at hand to assist with any additional luggage or extra curricular requests.

Back at Group 20 HQ opposite Rochester airport, I caught up with managing director Gary Franklin to chat about his vision for this company.

"Until you drive a super-car you will not fully appreciate the pleasure which can be experienced. Nothing can compare with the sensation of being in control of one of these incredible cars.

"I have an older Ferrari myself and felt it would be quite nice to see what the difference between it and a new car would be. I’ve only done 7,000 miles in it for the last four years and thought that with maintenance costs being around £15,000 year and the depreciation as well that just maybe there’s a better way of doing this, so thought of creating this company.

It will give people access to some of the finest supercars in the world," explained Gary, who named the company after the highest level insurance category their cars fall within.

After starting up leading car leasing firm Vehicle Options in the mid 1990s he had the financial backing to forge ahead with his plans for a more elite motoring project.

As the Bearsted-based director added, it’s far more than being just about the cars and there are plans to forge a programme of suitably classy events in consultation with its members.

Don’t be surprised if many of its clients number Premiership footballers, with links to Chelsea and Arsenal already having been charged.

The likes of Chris Tarrant are also said to be interested. Far from being merely a boys’ toys club, Gary revealed that a number of female celebrities are also considering joining.

But just how much will it cost you to gain access to this prime motoring society? Well, there’s a joining fee of just over £2,000 plus a flat-rate annual fee of £12,000, which seems a snip when it comes to what is being offered.

The only stipulation is that members use cars for no more than 50 days a year and treat them with respect.

"What we have here has been described as car porn and it’s very exciting to be running it! I wanted to have something outrageous in among the range which is why we’ve got the Zonda, there are so few of them in the world. This will be the most exclusive club around and have 17 associates who will be interviewing prospective members.

"They don’t have to be millionaires, far from it, but they might be the kind of people who already own a supercar."

With this in mind, you can probably appreciate that the average supercar owner is far from the shy and retiring kind. They positively crave to be seen in the right places by the right people driving the right car.

It seems Group 20 is perfectly placed to help them achieve this - perhaps the Bentley convertible for a trip to the races or the coast, then a nip in the Zonda for that Monaco glamour.

I can picture myself with a Maserati and Martini on the Riviera.
