New nightclub dream shattered by government inspector

You wanted a new nightclub – but the powers of be didn’t agree.

A government inspector has thrown out proposals to build a new club in the heart of Canterbury, much to the delight of residents in the site’s “fall-out” area.

Premier Nightclub’s plans to set up the venue on the first floor of Invicta House in Lower Bridge Street won approval from the city council’s licensing committee but were rejected by the development control committee.

The applicants went to appeal, prompting a heated debate a Kent Online SpeakOut .

Around 77 per cent of respondents to the question ‘does Canterbury need another nightclub?’ returned an overwhelming vote of “yes”, with would-be revelers complaining there was little else to do in the city at night.

But a Government planning inspector sided with objectors, concluding the club “would result in a significant and unacceptable increase in late-night disturbance” for residents in nearby streets.

Cllr Nick Eden-Green, who spoke out against the application, said: “I am delighted that an independent planning inspector has made this decision but saddened that our own licensing committee recommended approval.

“For once residents have been listened to, even if it has taken an outside inspector to do so.”
