A clean-up operation is under way on the Stour in Canterbury after an oil spillage polluted the river.

Officers from the Environment Agency are tackling the incident using floating booms and absorbent materials to contain the slicks.

They say no dead fish have been reported as a result of the spillage, evidence of which was spread along the river in the city centre from the Greyfriars Gardens to the Weavers.

The source of the pollution is unknown but being investigated, although officers say they are not yet linking it with a similar incident two weeks ago.

The latest pollution was reported on Saturday but the clean-up was still continuing today.

Colin Bowley, environment management team leader said "Our officers responded very quickly to this incident. We are working with Clancy Docwra and Southern Water to remove the contaminants from the water.

"The oil is now contained but as we cannot confirm what the source was, we will remain on site and investigate to minimise the chance of further leakage."

The public are encouraged to report any instances of pollution to the EA’s 24 hour incident hotline on 0800 807060.
