Oliver Lee has returned to West Ham after Gillingham decided against offering him an extended stay.

The 19-year-old made seven appearance for the Gills during a two-month youth loan stint.

Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler believes the young midfielder will be better suited playing at a different level than League 2.

"He is a good player but this league is difficult," said the Gills boss.

"He is a good footballer but maybe he would be better in a better league because at times it is a physical league and if he doesn't affect the game with the ball then it is difficult for him to affect it with the other side of his game. We had a good chat and we thanked him for his time."

Lee (pictured) is believed to have been told he will be released from the Hammers in the summer.

Hessenthaler said: "This gives him an opportunity to play a few games there before the end of the season, also to get himself lined up for next season. We wished him well."

Meanwhile, on Monday the Gills lost 1-0 to Brighton in a practice game, which gave valuable match practice to the likes of Charlie Lee, who played 45 minutes.

Ross Flitney also made a return from injury to play in goal.
