One of the best pubs in England? We'll raise a glass to that..

If you fancy a pint in one of the best pubs in England, you won't have to travel far to find one.

The Anchor Inn in Faversham has been named as one of the top 25 pubs in Britain.

Editor of the Good Beer Guide, Roger Protz, compiled a list of his top picks when it comes to the perfect pint in reaction to claims that the industry is suffering due to the credit crunch and the smoking ban.

The list, printed in The Independent, praised the 17th century pub for its quay-side location and selection of beers from 'impressive local brewery' Shepherd Neame.

Licensee David Little said he was surprised to find out from one of the locals that the pub had made the grade, and believes both the standard of clientele and the venue’s fidelity to traditional pub values made it stand out.

He said: “I think the Anchor Inn is what people perceive a proper pub should be - plenty of beams, plenty of panelling, plenty of real ale.

“The beers are very distinctive - our Master Brew is everything you’d expect from Kentish ale.

“But the pub also has a fantastic mix of people, and it’s all about conversation. To be honest, I think it’s the people that make the pub.”

He added: “The most pleasing thing is who compiled the list – Roger Protz is very well-respected in this business, and is a champion of the traditional British ale.”
