An opening date for a new Aldi supermarket in a former Sports Direct store has been confirmed.

The new branch will welcome its first customers at Westwood Gateway Retail Park in Broadstairs from 8am on Thursday, November 24 at 8am.

The international budget chain will have a team of 36 members of staff at the Westwood store, including 15 new recruits.

A spokesman for the grocery giant told KentOnline: "The new store will offer fresh, British meat products with weekly offers including exclusive beers, wines and spirits, and a ‘food to go’ section at the front of the store."

The supermarket will also stock 'Specialbuys' in the middle aisles every Thursday and Sunday.

The ribbon will be cut at 452 Margate Road, Broadstairs, by bronze-medal-winning Olympian Grace Balsdon, who said: "“I’m so excited to be opening Aldi’s new store.

"It will be great to chat to customers and a lovely way for me to thank Aldi for its support of Team GB.”

Aldi has been an official partner to Team GB since 2015.

Store manager Thomas Drury said: “We can’t wait to open the doors to the new store in Westwood Cross. It’s set to be a special day and having Olympic hero Grace Balsdon join us will make it a morning to remember.”

The hockey player will be giving away free bags of fresh fruit and veg to the first 30 customers through the door.

The site at Westwood Gateway Retail Park was previously home to Sports Direct, Maplin and Bathhouse stores.

Aldi will be calling on local charities and food banks to register with Neighbourly, a community engagement platform that links businesses to charitable organisations in the area.

Charities in Broadstairs will be able to collect surplus fruit, vegetables and baked goods that would otherwise go to waste from the store seven days a week.

The supermarket will be open 8am till 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am till 4pm Sunday.
