Pedestrian recovering from brain op struck by car

A PEDESTRIAN who had just recovered from a life-threatening condition needed hospital treatment after being hit by a car while crossing the road.

The incident happened at Rochester Esplanade, near Rochester Bridge, just before 9.40am on Saturday.

The injured man was taken to Gillingham's Medway Maritime Hospital with minor cuts and grazes.

Kent Police Insp Geoff Stevenson said: “The victim’s injuries were taken seriously because it was found he had recently had a brain operation to remove an abscess from the frontal lobe.

“Thankfully it was discovered these injuries were not life threatening.”

Police say the car involved was a silver Fiat Punto saloon and while the 76-year old driver had initially left the scene he returned about 20 minutes later.

Insp Stevenson said: “He was probably in shock and was certainly unable to drive after that. His friends took him home.”

Police say the driver was spoken to at the scene but was not arrested or charged with any offence.

Rochester Esplanade was temporarily closed after the accident.
