Pensioner wedged behind door

AN ELDERLY woman who fell out of bed in the middle of the night had to be rescued by firefighters after she became wedged behind a door.

Winnie Sadler, 94, has lived at the Haven Care Home in Church Road, Tovil, near Maidstone, for 10 years and, although in relatively good health, is frail and no longer speaks.

When she tried to turn over in bed at around 4am today she rolled out onto the floor and behind a door.

Maidstone firefighters were called out to help, and one firefighter eventually managed to slide behind the door and lift her back to safety.

The fire crew took just 20 minutes to complete the rescue, and Mrs Sadler escaped with some bruising to her cheek and nose, and abrasions on her arm.

Linda Thatcher, senior carer, said: “She is a lovely lady. She doesn’t speak now. She just smiles at you."

Mrs Sadler used to live at Loose, near Maidstone. “When she first came here she used to be able to get out of bed and toddle about, but not now she is that much older.

“We were worried because it’s a bit concerning as she doesn’t normally do that. Once in bed and tucked up she is usually ok.”

The family, who all live in Reading, were due to be contacted this week.
