The body of a man has been recovered from the River Stour in Canterbury city centre by a specialist water rescue unit.

Police say the victim is aged in his 50s but they are not treating the death as suspicious.

They were called to the scene opposite the Miller's Arms in the St Radigund's area of the city at about 7.45pm on Monday.

It followed reports that a body had been seen submerged in the weir.

A specialist water rescue unit from Whitstable Fire Station was called who retrieved the man's body from the water which is around 7ft deep.

A police spokesman later said the formal identification of the victim was continuing and next of kin were being informed.
