ADVICE: Neighbourhood Inspector Robin Wharfe
ADVICE: Neighbourhood Inspector Robin Wharfe

POLICE in Medway are continuing in their efforts to combat seasonal crime and make the area a safer place in the run up to Christmas.

Neighbourhood Officers will be on the lookout for insecurities to houses and vehicles. They will make an effort to alert people if they feel that they are increasing the risk of becoming a victim of crime.

Medway Police are also issuing security advice in an effort to beat the thief, Neighbourhood Insp Robin Wharfe said: "We want to ensure that Medway residents enjoy a crime free Christmas and to do this I would recommend that they take a few simple security steps.

"It is important that people make sure that their home is secure at all times and that they lock their doors and windows. Store Christmas gifts in a safe secure place, so they cannot be viewed from outside your house. Invest in some timer switches to give the impression that your home is occupied when you are out.

"Take care to secure all external Christmas lights and decorations, and think carefully about where you place them. Could they be a handy climbing frame for a burglar?

"Finally, consider the security of your car. Never store presents in your vehicle and ensure that you always remove any valuables before leaving your car unattended.

"Be mindful that thieves are always on the look out for an array of items including mobile phones, satellite navigation systems and even loose change.

"I am keen for people to support us in our efforts to reduce burglaries at Christmas and I hope that Medway residents will enjoy a crime free seasonal holiday."

Police media spokeswoman Sally Smith said: "This police action and advice is supported by an initiative that involves plain-clothes officers patrolling town centre areas in Medway on the trail of shoplifters and thieves.

"The officers are supported by uniformed patrols aiming to provide a visual deterrent to potential thieves."
