A 25-year-old prison officer has been suspended after being charged with taking drugs into a jail where he is employed.

Martin Nelson, an officer at HMP Swaleside, was allegedly found with 991g of cannabis during a routine check.

A Home Office spokesman confirmed that an officer was suspended after "items of contraband were allegedly found in his possession".

Nelson, of Minster Drive, Minster, near Sheerness, has been charged with possession with intent to supply and will appear before Sittingbourne magistrates on Monday, January 23.
