Rail victim was walking along line

A MAN who died after being struck by a train was walking along the railway line towards Gillingham station at the time.

The 36-year-old has not yet been named but is thought to have lived on St Mary’s Island, Chatham Maritime.

He was hit by a passenger train on the line between Rainham and Gillingham at about 1am on Sunday.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “We are treating the man’s death as an accident. The man had been drinking but it has not been confirmed how much.

“He was walking on the railway line towards Gillingham station. We have not been able to formally identify the body yet.”
