Is God a delusion? Is lying always wrong? Is violence ever justifiable? Is The X Factor better than Strictly Come Dancing?

These are just some of the heated debates that could to take place at the University of Kent this weekend as part of a one-day course celebrating the art of the argument.

As part of the University’s open day on Saturday, Professor of Philosophy Laurence Goldstein will be staging several arguments around the Canterbury campus throughout the day – and everyone is invited, from budding politicians and business leaders to those who just like a good rant.

Professor Goldstein said: "Arguing is an intrinsically enjoyable activity, and sometimes a view may be put forward that is so subtle and persuasive that it can be savoured like a work of art or a piece of music.

"Some of the subjects we argue about are hugely important, and remain controversial even when opponents agree on all the evidence.

"We want to know the answers and the best way of getting close is through argument."

Entitled 'For the Sake of Argument', the free event is open to the public. No expertise is required of participants and people are free to join or leave an argument, or just listen, whenever they wish.

Arguments will begin at 10.30am, noon and 2.30pm. Details of the location of each argument will be available on at the welcome desk in the University Sports Centre entrance, the Admissions stand and Philosophy Stand in the Sports Hall, and the Information Desk in the Gulbenkian Theatre entrance.
