Runaway offender, 14, back in care

A YOUNG prisoner who escaped from custody while he was being transported from a secure training centre in Rochester is now back in care.

The 14-year-old boy went on the run after escaping from the custody of escort staff.

He ran away as she was getting out of a minibus at about 10.20am on November 2 in Cookham Wood Road.

The teenager, who comes from the Camden area of London and does not have a history of violence, sparked a huge search in the Medway area.

Police swooped on the area in patrol cars and in the air via a helicopter.

A spokesman for Camden Borough Council said: "We were alerted by Kent Police that a 14-year-old from Camden absconded while being transported between secure units in Kent, while on remand. He was picked up quickly by the police later the same day and is now back in appropriate care."

An investigation is now underway to establish how he was able to abscond and a review of security measures will be taken, if necessary.
