THE Guild of Experienced Motorists has reminded lone female drivers how to cope with dangerous situations.

According to GEM, its free booklet - The Safety of Women Behind The Wheel Ð is an essential read if women are to feel confident when out and about on their own.

David Williams, chief executive, said: "Women have to be constantly vigilant and aware of the possible dangerous situations. Our advice will help them minimise the risk to themselves and, although less important, their possessions."

Key points in the leaflet include:

* Keep doors locked when travelling in town.

* Park in a well lit area where there are plenty of people.

* Find a space near the exit and ramps in a multi-storey car park.

* Never put a handbag on the passenger seat.

* Put spare shoes and the like in the boot.

* When you return to the car, have your keys ready, check inside and get in as quickly as possible.

* If you car starts to play up, stop in a busy, well lit area.

* Do not give lifts to strangers.

* If you see a driver in difficult, do not stop, drive to a safe stopping place and report what you have seen.

* If a car pulls up alongside or behind you and the occupants try to attract your attention, keep your doors locked and drive to a busy place such as a service area or busy forecourt before stopping. Even then, keep your doors locked until you are confident there is no danger.

Other sections of the booklet cover breakdowns, accidents and travelling with children and the elderly. It features an emergency checklist for reference.
