Schools in a Kent town are on high alert after a suspected pervert tried to sexually assault a girl.

Parents of 10 primary and secondary schools in Gravesend have been sent text alerts and handed letters advising them to be extra vigilant.

It follows an alleged attack on a 15-year-old in Valley Drive.

The girl was walking across The Warren recreation ground at about 8.30am yesterday when a man rode past her on his bicycle.

He then disappeared around the corner.

But as the girl rounded the corner, she spotted the man's bike on the floor and he asked her the time.

As she went to answer, he lunged for her.

He is then believed to have tried to pull her into a bush - but after a struggle she managed to get away.

The suspect is described as white, aged 20 to 27, with short dark hair and big brown eyes.

He was clean-shaven and slim, wearing a dark jacket and jeans.

The cycle was a dark-coloured mountain bike with thin tyres and big wheels.

He came from the direction of the shops in Livingstone Road.

Anyone with information should contact Kent Police on 01622 690 690 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
