Space: the final frontier is out there!

Researchers have discovered a majority of new homes lack storage space, meaning in some cases, vacuum cleaners have to be left at parents’ homes nearby. Janet Burnell, of Kent-based Pentland Homes, describes how important space is to the modern buyer.

Recent research carried out by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has highlighted the five key things people want from new homes. These are space for domestic utility tasks, big windows for natural light, large rooms with high ceilings, layouts which take technology into account, and space for private time away from other members of the family.

Whilst working within the remit of planning regulations, we always take into consideration a buyer’s needs and wellbeing when designing our properties to create flexible, functional space that suits the 21st century lifestyle.

We aim to provide a range of storage options, such as cupboards under the stairs, linen cupboards in bathrooms and built-in spacious wardrobes for the bedrooms.

To take advantage of natural light, we use innovative glass designs, such as double-height glazed windows, galleried dining areas and floor to ceiling windows – all of which make the home bright and spacious.

In response to thoughtful layouts, we offer a service where buyers can personalise and carry out alterations like removing or repositioning walls to create space that suits them.

Pentland’s initiative Flexible Interior Treatment puts the buyer in charge of the design process to create layouts which match their current needs and can be adapted at a later date during their occupancy. We believe this is a real incentive to buying a new home as it gives the property a sense of longevity.

As well as innovative floor planning, we also look at other space saving initiatives. For example, we install underfloor heating instead of radiators that take up wall space.

All in all, we ensure our properties are designed to be functional, flexible and comfortable so that they can be enjoyed by all that live in them.
