Strood Matalan's rise from the ashes postponed

The reopening of a shop destroyed by fire could be delayed until next year.

Matalan in Strood Retail Park burned down in a massive blaze in August 2006.

The rebuilt store was expected to reopen on Thursday but the company says it has had to postpone the opening until further notice.

A spokesman was unable to explain the reason behind the delay but said the store may not open until 2009.

In November 2006, workmen started to demolish the remains of the old store but building work was delayed while the retailer awaited the outcome of a planning application.

Work on the new two-storey building began earlier this year and the Medway Messenger was told the finishing touches were being added to the store last month.

The fire two years ago was one of the biggest blazes in Medway for years.

More than 100 firefighters were called to the scene in Commercial Road, while nearby stores had to be closed for the day and roads were shut off as they tackled the fire.

It is thought about 60 jobs will be created when the new stores opens.
