Teen's death was 'tragic loss'

A "bubbly" 13-year-old who hanged herself with her school tie may have seen death as glamourous, an inquest has heard.

Hannah Bond was discovered by her mother Heather hanging from her bunk bed at the family's home in Old Road, East Peckham, last September.

At an inquest into her death in Maidstone today, the court heard how the teenager classed herself as an EMO, which stands for emotional and describes particular fashion and music tastes embraced by some teenagers.

About two weeks before she hanged herself, her father Raymond had noticed some self-harm marks on her left wrist, which Hannah told him was an EMO "initiation".

Friends at her school, Mascalls School in Paddock Wood, also classed themselves as EMO and at least one of her friends had tried self-harming by cutting his arm.

A remembrance book left at the school also had some remarks in it which glamorised death. One person said they hoped Hannah enjoyed her "black parade".

Roger Sykes, coroner for Mid Kent and Medway, said that a suicide note found under the youngster's mattress revealed that she did intend to take her own life.

He said: "She was a friendly girl who was doing well at school, who, in her mother's words, had everything to live for, and I find it disturbing that the death could be seen as a glamorous one.

"It was not glamorous. It was a tragic loss of such a young life."
