The latest drive-thru - for recycling!

You name it they recycle it.

This is the ethos of a new drive-through recycling facility in north Kent which could make you go green overnight.

Residents are already flocking to Kent’s new first indoor recycling centre at Pepperhill, near Gravesend.

The £3.6m centre, which aims to recycle more than 70 per cent of household waste, was officially opened this week by former Tomorrow’s World presenter Philippa Forrester.

It is hoped her support for Pepperhill Household Waste Recycling Centre, which is run by Kent County Council and the Waste Recycling Group, (WRG), will encourage more people to recycle their waste.

The skips take a wide range of items from spectacles to scrap metal, TVs and washing machines.

Keith Ferrin, KCC cabinet member for environment, highways and waste, said: “Having Philippa’s support behind the council’s recycling services means a great deal to everyone involved in this project, knowing how committed she is to this cause.

“Pepperhill’s new facilities provide good quality services to the residents of Gravesham. My aim is for local residents to have a good customer experience every time they visit.

"Pepperhill is geared to recycle over 70 per cent of residents’ items and with the help of the public we can achieve these figures.

"We want to do everything we can to encourage residents to recycle more and I’d like to thank those that do already.”

Trevor Young site manager for WRG said: “On arrival at the centre, customers will be met by our trained greeters who will show visitors how to use the site and assist them with their recycling.

"The fact that the site is undercover means customers can recycle in comfort rather than being exposed to the elements. It’s these extra touches that make visiting Pepperhill a pleasant experience and encourage residents to recycle even more.”

More than 300,000 visits are expected annually

The Pepperhill Household Waste Recycling Centre is in Station Road, Southfleet.

It will serve residents from Gravesham Borough Council and eastern parts of Darford Borough Council and will receive approximately 60,000 tonnes of waste and 10,000 tonnes of mixed recyclables by both councils.

The centre is designed to manage up to 130,000 tonnes of waste, approximately 10 per cent of Kent’s total household waste and also will manage waste generated by local businesses.
