Theft of 40 drain covers puts lives in peril

DETECTIVES are appealing for information following the theft of around 40 drain covers - all in the same area.

The thefts occurred in the Borstal Village area, near Rochester, between Wednesday, June 27 and Monday, July 2.

Det Sgt Andy Henshaw said: "Our main concern is for the safety of road users. If a bicycle or motorbike wheel were to drop down the hole where a cover has been stolen, someone could be killed."

He added: "To steal 40 covers would have taken considerable time and I am confident someone must have seen the thieves in action. I would like to urge those witnesses to contact us as soon as possible."

The drain covers have an estimated value of around £14,000.

Anyone has any information is asked to to contact detectives at Medway police station on 01634 792524 or Kent CrimeStoppers on 0800 555111.
