Truckers take to the roads in fuel protest

A road haulage boss from Faversham is among truckers taking part in a huge convoy to protest against crippling fuel duty prices today.

Peter Knight, of Les Knight Transport, will join dozens of trucks and HGV lorries which set off at 6.30am from Farthing Corner services on the M2 for Park Lane in London.

The protest has been organised by road haulage group TransAction 2007 and has the consent of the Metropolitan Police.

Mr Knight said: “We want to bring to the Government’s attention that they are slowing killing our industry.

“We need them to sit back and listen, or they will end up with no road hauliers in the UK.”

In London, a letter will be handed to the government by Derek Wyatt, MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey, suggesting recommendations for concessions on fuel tax for the haulage industry

Geoff Dossiter from the Freight Transport Association is not officially backing the direct action, but said he had sympathy for those participating.

He said: “It is unthinkable that the Chancellor of the Exchequer could possibly increase (fuel duty) in October.

“The price of oil is going up and will continue to go up, and we have to be very worried about that.”

He added: "I am not sure what the Goverment can do about it at the moment, but they can look at the impact of higher fuel duty on truckers.”
