Police officers in Medway were awarded certificates for their professionalism, dedication and courage, at a ceremony held earlier today.

Area Commander for Medway, Chief Superintendent Steve Corbishley led the event held to recognise officers who had gone above and beyond the call of duty over the past year.

He said: “Medway is a busy area but this does not affect my officers in rising to the many challenges they face.

“The people being awarded at this ceremony are a credit to both Medway and the police service as a whole.

“They are people who want to make Medway a safer place and will put in the extra effort to ensure a job well done.

“I am proud of their contribution and I look forward to formally recognising their achievements.’

One award was given posthumously to the late, PC Janita Pattenden who died in January after a long battle with breast cancer.

She was awarded a certificate of merit. Her devoted husband, Danny and two young sons, Alfie and Harry were there to collect the award as her parents, Ken and Pauline Tappenden watched in the audience.

PC Wendy Knight also won recognition after she went to the aid of a man who collapsed at a golf club, while off duty last January.

She was able to resuscitate him and her actions allowed him to be transferred to hospital.

Sadly, the man later died, but her bosses say her actions showed outstanding professional conduct and dedication and say her efforts were recognised by the family of the deceased man.

Recognition als went to PC Nigel Arnold, PS Steven Holpin and PS James Beautridge.

In October 2008, the trio were on route to an unrelated meeting in Grain, the officers were alerted to a silent alarm at High Halstow Post Office.

Aware that a series of armed robberies had been committed in the area over the previous three days, the officers rushed to the scene.

PC Arnold dealt with two traumatised and vulnerable witnesses whilst also sealing off the crime-scene.

His efforts resulted in a car which was linked to the robbery being stopped almost immediately.

PS Holpin and PS Beautridge arrested the four people in the car finfing a cash box from the post office and a weapon used to carry out the robbery.

The officers efforts resulted in three of the men being charged with the three robberies.
