Good citizens who pick up others' rubbish could be set to clean up.

For, in a ground-breaking move spearheaded by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, anyone spotted picking up litter off the streets could be handed fast food vouchers.

Council chiefs are hoping to encourage litter pickers with vouchers for food or shopping as part of a new 'Love Where You Live’ scheme.

The council is the first local authority to be chosen as an ambassador for the national project.

Cllr Howard Rogers, cabinet member for environmental services, said: “The idea is to encourage everyone to take responsibility - that’s individuals, local authorities, voluntary groups, government, local businesses and multi-national companies - to change the way people think and act about littering.

“We all love something about where we live and this new campaign is about everyone working together to make change happen.”

It’s the seventh Keep Britain Tidy campaign the council has worked on, including the 'There’s no such thing as the dog poo fairy’ project.

Phil Barton, chief executive of the organisation, said he was pleased to have the council on board again.

He said: “Our ambitious campaign can only work with the support of everyone in the community - individuals, businesses, schools and voluntary organisations.

“With the help of enthusiastic local authorities like Tonbridge and Malling, Love Where You Live will make a real difference.”

More than 200 coupons have been handed out since the project launch on Monday, September 19.

McDonald’s is one of main sponsors to donate vouchers.

The scheme has gained support from Tonbridge Baptist Church, Tonbridge Canoe Club, Medway Valley Countryside Partnership, K-College’s campus in Brook Street, Tonbridge, Hadlow Carbon Community, Russet Homes, and Wouldham All Saints Primary School in School Lane.
