We will get to see our MPs' expenses - just not yet

Full details of all MPs' expenses claims are now expected to be published next month.

However, the receipts indicating how 14 MPs, including former Conservative leader and Folkestone and Hythe MP Michael Howard, spent allowances for the costs of maintaining second homes, are expected to be published today.

The overall amounts the 14 claimed have already been made available but detailed receipts have not.

The Commons' authorities failed in its efforts to block the release of details of MPs' expenses. A ruling by the High Court agreed with campaigners that there was a public interest in the disclosure of detailed information about how money had been spent on things like mortgage repayments, household bills, cleaning, repairs and rent.

The ruling means the Commons' authorities are now preparing to release an estimated million receipts for claims submitted in 2005 and 2006 using the controversial "John Lewis list" of furnishings.

Faversham and Mid Kent MP Hugh Robertson said the Commons' authorities faced a huge logistical exercise drawing together all the details of more than 640 MPs.
