Whitstable pensioner seriously injured in crash

An elderly woman is in a serious condition in hospital after an accident in Whitstable town centre.

The 80-year-old local woman was hit by a Ford Escort as she made her way across a zebra crossing in Oxford Street.

The accident, between the town's library and Co-Operative supermarket, happened at 5.05pm on Wednesday.

She was taken to the QEQM Hospital in Margate after sustaining serious head injuries, where her condition is described as critical.

Emergency services closed the road until 11.45pm to allow investigations to take place.

Kent Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for any witnesses to the accident and are asked to call 01622 798538.
