WI branch disbands after 70 years

ONE of the longest-established Women's Institutes in East Kent has had to close because of dwindling membership.

The committee of Lower Hardres WI, near Canterbury, which was formed 70 years ago, has had to suspend the branch.

Press officer Peggy Appleton said: "It is very sad but the crunch came when there was no one to take on the role of president. Without that the branch cannot function.

"Our last president Penny Wharlow had done a sterling job over the last three years but, understandably, could not commit to another term."

In its hey day the branch had nearly 50 members but that has now fallen to just over 20.
