Will it be strawberry fields forever?

STRAWBERRY growers have promised more than 300 permanent jobs if they win a polytunnels planning battle.

An application to cover more than 60 acres of farmland in Waterham. near Faversham, with the controversial plastic growing aid is being decided this week.

Some people living nearby are pleading for more time to investigate the risk of flooding and effects on wildlife.

However, Swale councillors look set to approve the scheme in spite of objections by residents, including boxing legend Barry McGuigan who lives in Dargate.

Rebecca Edmonds, community relations manager for the S&A group which runs Hernhill Nurseries, said: “At the moment, 300 to 400 seasonal workers are employed, but if we get planning permission what we want to do is not increase production but extend the season for strawberries.

“Instead of having to get migrant workers, we will be able to offer permanent posisions to locals."

Kate Birtles who lives in Highstreet Road, Waterham, said residents were hoping the decision could be deferred at tomorrow's meeting at Swale House, Sittingbourne.
