Andrews to face keen rivals at Lydden

HERNE Bay's Barry Andrews will be looking for an outright win when he returns to Lydden on Sunday to race in two Open Single Seater Challenge events, part of of the race meeting run by the South Eastern Motor Sports Enthusiasts Club.

Three weeks ago at his home track, the co-proprietor of The Motorist Centre at Hersden made a remarkable comeback to the sport after a long lay-off. His rare Martini Mk.72 Formula Renault, resplendent in Marlboro-McLaren colours, was only just pipped to victory by Mark Smith's Formula Vauxhall.

But this time Andrews has another rival to contend with. His partner at The Motorist Centre, Peter Ware, has also been tempted back to the sport and will be competing in the same race with a Ralt RT32. Both are former single seater champions at Lydden.

The trend continues with the return of Chilham's Brian Davis, another former

Lydden champion, who has built up a special Suzuki silhouette saloon with the assistance of ace fabricator John Sabourin, from Ash. The Autoquip proprietor will be racing in the Super Saloons event.

Completing the quartet of corner-crazy drivers will be their old friend Tony

Halliwell (Bexley) who returns with a Radical Clubsport to compete in the SE Sports & Saloon Car Challenge event which will be run concurrently with the Credit Professionals Sports Car Championship. He too had been away from the sport for several years until the start of this season.

Father and son Nigel and Stephen Craig from Elham will be racing their Ford Escorts in the Intermediate and Super Saloon events against their near neighbour, Tony Skelton, from Bladbean who drives the Barretts of Canterbury Broad Oak Mini Cooper.

The remaining events on the eight-race programme are the SELOC BMW Challenge and the John Taylor Handicap Championship race.

Lydden Circuit is on the A2, eight miles south of Canterbury. Admission is

£8 (£6 for senior citizens). Parking, paddock and entry for accompanied

children is free.
