Arter not given up on new Charlton deal

On-loan midfielder Harry Arter is keen to impress with Welling

Basingstoke v Welling

On-loan Charlton midfielder Harry Arter plays his second game for Welling in Blue Square South at Basingstoke on Tuesday night.

The 19-year-old impressed with a stirling second-half display in the weekend win over Havant but has not set any targets between now and the end of the season.

"I came into the team for the first time and had only trained with them on Thursday," said Arter. "I'm still not familiar with all their names so it was quite tough.

"I'm looking forward to my loan here and we'll see what happens."

As for the future, Arter hasn't given up hope of earning a new deal at The Valley. But trials at the likes of Northampton, Ipswich and Gillingham in recent weeks underline the fact that his future could well be away from the club he joined while still at school.

"It's still early days, I haven't got anything in mind yet," he insisted. "I've come here to get a few games.

"Charlton haven't put anything on the table yet and they haven't really said anything about it. Anything can happen between now and the end of the season.

"I wouldn't say I've given up on Charlton, I would be silly to give up. I'm just going to try working hard in training and work on the areas they say I need to improve on.

"If it doesn't work out there then I'm not the type of kid to give up. It will probably make me a stronger character and I'll start again at whatever level.

"I went down to Gillingham. I could only sign on loan as the deadline had finished to sign me on a free transfer and they weren't willing to take me on loan.

"They said they wanted a bit more experience so that's what managers are like - everyone has their different opinions.

"I'm not going to disrespect Welling as they given me the opportunity to come down and play but talk to any player and they want to play at the highest level. If Gillingham had wanted to take me then obviously I would have gone there."

Welling welcome back forward James Baker from suspension but Sonny Cobbs is still likely to be sidelined.

Meanwhile, Welling's Kent Senior Cup semi-final at home to Ramsgate has been arranged for Tuesday, March 17.
