Away win extends Wings flying start

Thurrock 1 Welling 2

Welling maintained their unbeaten start to the season as first half goals from Charlie Sheringham and Sonny Cobbs gave them vistory at Thurrock on Saturday.

The Wings dominated for long periods and the margin of victory could have been more comfortable with some better finishing.

Welling took the lead on 27 minutes when Cobbs burst clear and his pull back to Craig Graham-Barrett saw the full-back's cross-shot turned in by Sheringham from close range.

Thurrock skipper Lee Flynn was booked four minutes later for a foul off the ball on Ryan Martin. The reaction of the Welling bench suggested a more serious offence and Wings assistant Jimmy Dack was sent off by referee Nigel Lugg for his protests over the incident.

Thurrock were level on 34 minutes when Fola Orilonishe's left-wing cross was turned into his own net by Graham Braham-Barrett.

Within a minute, Welling restored their lead when a short corner fell to Cobbs and his left-foot effort from 20 yards was deflected beyond keeper Andrew Young.

It could have been three just before the break, but Young saved well from Graeme Andrews' header and Matt Paine headed the rebound against his own crossbar.

Chances were few and far between in the second half - although Sheringham missed a simple opportunity to make it 3-1 after smart work by Braham-Barrett.

Thurrock substitute Danny Lodge should have equalised with 10 minutes left but his close range effort was saved by the legs of Jamie Turner.

Wings boss Andy Ford said: "It was a pleasing result. We wanted to start at a high tempo because they haven't been doing so well and that was important for us.

"We changed a bit around and played 3-5-2 because we wanted to have more possession in midfield. It's a good option for us to change it like that."

Third-placed Welling host Fisher on Bank Holiday Monday, kick-off 3pm.
