CHARLTON are safely through to the third round of this year's Carling Cup after a 1-0 win over Carlisle at The Valley on Tuesday night.

Darren Bent scored the only goal of the game 12 minutes into the second half, turning Dennis Rommedahl's cross-shot in from close range.

Bent, who now has four goals this season, had other good chances, but the Addicks survived a scare when Peter Murphy's long-range effort came back off Thomas Myhre's crossbar.

Charlton: Myhre, Young, Fortune, El Karkouri, Ashton, Kishishev (Sankofa 82), Rommedahl, Faye, Ambrose, M Bent (Lisbie 90), D Bent.
Subs not used: Andersen, John, Walker.
