JASON BROWN: set to keep his place

GILLINGHAM keeper Jason Brown looks set to keep his place in goal for Saturday's home clash with Wolves.

But player-manager Andy Hessenthaler has admitted how hard it was to drop Steve Banks before last weekend’s trip to West Ham.

Banks, who started the first 14 league games, had been considered by many to be one of Gillingham's best players this season.

Hessenthaler said: “We just felt that considering the run we are in, we should give Jason Brown a run in the team.

“Steve Banks has done nothing wrong but we wanted to try a different voice behind the defence. Steve wasn’t happy about it but he’s a great professional and his attitude in training has been fantastic.”

Meanwhile, Gills’ French keeper Bertrand Bossu has joined Oldham on a month’s loan. Bossu, who starred in the Gills’ FA Cup win over Charlton last season, impressed Oldham boss Brian Talbot in two trial matches.

After entertaining Wolves, Gills take on Watford on Tuesday night. Darren Byfield is out for both games after requiring 16 stitches in his leg after a freak collision with an advertising board at West Ham.

It's a frustrating period for Gills who have lost their last seven games.

New signing John Robinson is also out after injuring his hamstring in the warm-up at Upton Park, while Patrick Agyemang (hamstring), Nicky Southall (thigh), Paul Smith (groin), Alan Pouton (knee) and John Hills (knee) will also be missing.

Hessenthaler said: “We're going to have a very young side out and an inexperienced bench. But if we’re going to turn our season around, then it has to start with these two games. I’d like six points but we need at least four. We’ll be up and at them and in their faces right from the start.”

Tommy Johnson should be involved in the squad for the Wolves match after playing for the reserves against Southend on Wednesday, while 18-year-old Matt Bodkin will also be called up.
