DAVID FULTON could afford to look satisfied as he loaded his playing kit into his car on Saturday afternoon at Edgbaston.

He had just led the county to their third straight championship win and to the top of the table after annihilating title holders and previous leaders Warwickshire by an innings and with almost two sessions to spare.

Though batting form continues to elude the Kent skipper, his decision making proved almost flawless in a game he controlled from the toss of the coin to the congratulatory handshakes just after lunch on the final day.

"It was a good win against a good side," Fulton summed up as he prepared to drive back to his Larkfield home.

"Being champions we didn’t expect them to lie down so to polish them off in quick time was a nice surprise.

"We set out anticipating a tough final day, a little like at Canterbury in the first match of the season when we had them nine down on the last day.

"But we all remembered how hard that felt to not quite finish the job off, so it was a huge bonus to achieve this win with time to spare.

"They are a decent batting line up and as they proved in their first innings you are never completely through them, but credit to our guys for rolling them over second time around."

Though Min Patel took the last day plaudits with his best bowling figures since 2001, Fulton was quick to point out the batting contributions of his top order who chipped in with two half centuries and a brace of tons as Kent posted their best score of the summer.

Fulton added: "The key difference was that we knew the pitch would take spin and getting Min Patel into the game would be vital in that regard.

"Some sections of the media thought we batted on too long, but the reason I did that was that the longer the game went on so the more spin would influence the outcome.

"We’d seen Alex Loudon turning the ball and didn’t really want to come out on the last day and chase anything, so the plan was to bat on, bat big and put the option of making us bat again beyond them.

"Getting Nick Knight in his (Patel’s) first over of the day set the tone for us and capped a good team performance, with a brilliant effort from the bat, Darren Stevens and Matt Walker in particular.

"With the exception of myself I think everyone contributed to a very decent team performance."

Kent now prepare for the start of their Twenty20 Cup qualifiers on Wednesday but Fulton has yet to make a decision as to whether he or Matt Walker will lead the side.

"I will play a full part in every game but we won’t be declaring our hand until the start of each match," he said.
