Newcastle 1 Charlton 1

DENNIS ROMMEDAHL scored a spectacular equaliser to earn Charlton a priceless point away to bogey side Newcastle whom they had not beaten, home or away, in seven Premiership attempts.

Newcastle, who had knocked long and hard in their attempts to break down a resolute Charlton defence, saw their persistence pay off when Kieron Dyer gave them a 52nd minute lead after Titus Bramble and skipper Alan Shearer had combined to create the opening.

Within a minute, Charlton were back on level terms when Rommedahl took a pass from Paul Konchesky to beat goalkeeper Shay Given with a shot in off a post.

The Denmark international could have won the game for Charlton but missed excellent chances in the 74th and 76th minutes with the Newcastle fans booing their own side.
